Vitamin D Education
Let’s take control of our health, one step at a time. My mission is to provide education so people can be healthy and live their best life.
Today we are going to discuss the importance of optimal vitamin D levels. Vitamin D is essential hormone with numerous health benefits including healthy aging. Vitamin D helps your body take in calcium and phosphorus which are needed for healthy bones and teeth. Vitamin D plays a major role in our bodies immune health so we can recover from viral infections. Studies now show during the Covid 19 crisis many of the people that ended up very ill and hospitalized had very low vitamin D levels. Studies have shown that Vitamin D is more beneficial to the body and keeping it at a optimal level is more important than any of the other vitamins.
Being deficient in vitamin D can contribute to many health issues. I was shocked to learn 90% of my patients had extremely low vitamin D levels. Globally 75% of menopausal women are extremely deficient in vitamin D and that percentage increases with age as well as associated health risks.

It is very difficult to get adequate amounts of Vitamin D from foods alone. The other source of vitamin D is from the sun light, as ultraviolet light causes the skin to synthesize vitamin D at the cellular level. Adequate levels of vitamin D are necessary for maintenance of skeletal mass which is dependent on vitamin D and calcium. Vitamin D is necessary for the GI absorption of calcium.
Numerous studies show that vitamin D is linked to bone health. 1out of 2 women and 1out of 3 men age 50 and over will develop a osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime due to being deficient in vitamin D. Another study conducted by the University of Maryland linked the connection between low vitamin D levels and pregnant women. These women were more likely to have children that have asthma and allergy issues. The majority of patients affected with autoimmune diseases and or certain cancers have low vitamin D levels. The correlation between low vitamin D and cellular health has been established and understanding that this is an essential hormone for healthy aging at the cellular level.
The risk factors for Vitamin D deficiency:
Perimenopause
Darker pigmented skin
Limited sun exposure
Low levels of vitamin D can cause:

Weight gain
Fatigue
Low mood
Respiratory infections
Bone loss
Fractures
Muscle pain
Health risks associated with Vitamin D deficiency:
Cardiovascular disease
Certain cancers
Metabolic syndrome
Autoimmune Diseases
Osteoporosis
Depression
Cognitive function
Dementia & Alzheimer’s

As we age we face real health challenges but knowledge is power and staying informed about optimal vitamin D and other hormone levels will lead to healthier aging. Talk to your provider and get labs to assess your vitamin D levels. The researchers at University of California San Diego suggest the average American should be taking 5,000 IU a day of vitamin D supplements. The best supplements to optimize your vitamin D levels should be combined with vitamins A & K. When choosing your vitamin D supplement is should say ADK. I recommend Biote ADK 5 & Biote ADK 10 for my patients. Keeping your Vitamin D at a optimal range will help you stay healthy and support your health where it matters most.
